Need for 2 mail servers, ie. MX records

Besides reliability (no backup!) what is the disadvantage of having both MX records point to the same mail server?

I use smtp.changeip.com as the second. It seems that even though my own server is available, a lot (subjective of course!) of mail comes through the changeip server. Any thoughts/reasons why this is so?
