Hi,
I'm writing this to let everyone know of the problems I've encountered with the Dynamic DNS client, and the solution I came up with after few days of struggling with it. Hopefully it will help others with similar problems.
I'm using a subdomain of MyServer.org service and downloaded and installed their free client Dynamic DNS 2.0 Rev 22. After installing, it did not work properly and users trying to access my site kept getting the 'Site if offline' message. After uninstalling and reinstalling the client again, the problem seemed to be resolved. It was ok for a few days, and then the same thing started happening. In those few days, I did install and uninstalled a software firewall (ZoneAlarm). Not sure if that caused the client to act up again. Anyway, the problem now was that every time I restarted the server (that was a test/dev server and had to be restarted often), the client could not update my IP Address with MyServer.org, so users visiting the site would see MyServer.org 'Site is offline' screen, or would get the browser's default 'Page not found' screen. I tried using CodeFlux service (as recommended by MyServer.org help page). Also tried to switch the client to a different port (you have a choice of port 80, 1440 and 8080, if I remember correctly). On average, it took me about an hour of changing ports back and forth, and using CodeFlux to delete stray records, before I could get it to work. I had to do this every time I restarted the server. Once it started working, it would be fine until the server was restarted again. Contacted Technical Support a few times, but everything looked fine on their end, so I was left to figure it out on my own. After browsing thru the Technical Support site, I stumbled upon a page that tells you how to install and use a different client (DynSite). I installed the new client and it worked like a charm. Connected and uploaded my IP quickly and without problems, and has been working beautifully ever since. Keep in mind that DynSite is free for 30 days, and then it stops working. Also, my ISP rarely changes my IP. I've had the same number since installing DynSite, so don't know yet how it will react to a changing IP. However, the cable technicians were working on my neighbor's connection and they disconnected me by mistake (just for a few seconds), and DynSite reconnected without a hitch when the connection was restored, so I think it will be fine.
So, if you encounter problems with MyServer.org DNS client, try switching to DynSite client. It seems much better (keeping my fingers crossed).
Here is the page with instructions on how to install DynSite client: http://myserver.org/help/dynsite.asp
The client itself can be downloaded from cnet.com.
Well, that's it. Hope it help others with the same problem and saves them a few days of headaches. Good luck.
