If I run HomingBeacon as an application, it queries for the
current IP address every 5 minutes. After I installed the
product as an NT service, it only seems to run once -
when my machine boots.

This is really obvious when I look at the size of
the logs in the homingbeacon directory:

Since the IP address being assigned is actually
going to my router, I've had a few long periods
where my DDNS info was wrong.

Is there a way to make the NT Service scan at an
interval?

Thanks,
Don

Don,

Did you install it as an NT service using HomingBeacon.exe /install ?

Also - can you send me a few of the logs? Some of the larger and some of the smaller would be nice.

Thanks
Sam

I have HomingBeacon setup on a 2k box as a service and it updates when rebooted, however, it does not update periodically when the DHCP server decides to give the site a new IP address. Is there anything I can do to make sure that it is updating every hour or so, at least checking to see if it has a new external IP address and therefore updating the DDNS records?

No Event viewer errors - would it be possible to have Homing Beacon log an event if it cannot update or if it does update?

I've told it to download the list several times however usually it tells me that it is already up to date.

Here are the Report Logs (This is a new account)

Let me look into the code of the HomingBeacon - it is supposed to work the same as when in application mode, but I've heard reports of 2 users so far having this issue in service mode... and it's only recent.

I will let you know what I find out.

Thanks,
Sam

<updated: the service never updated the IP>

I have a manual workaround:

Since HB updates everytime it starts, create a scheduled task to run however often to want it to update that runs the homingbeacon.EXE. Set the task to forcefully end after 1 minute, and login as a user that can write to the install dir for HB.

The service never seems to update the IP without the interactive EXE running. Since the EXE runs and updates anyway... this will allow it to update and then close down.

Hope this helps...

In the coming months there will be a new client that is a native windows service, the current one is not a true service application but should work still. I will look into the source to see if there is an issue with the timer thats supposed to be calling the process each few mins when in service mode.

We are still working on HB2. Microsoft is giving us a big push to get this done as well so they can include it in their next smart applications offering this winter. I am hoping to see something completed in the next 2-3 weeks as thats our deadline with them...

I sent a message to the changeip support account weeks ago and never got a response. What is the ETA on a version of HomingBeacon that actually works as a service? I have an Win2K3 Server machine at home that I am using as a Web server and HomingBeacon works great as a client but does nothing when I follow the instructions (/install) and install it as a service.

PLEASE let me know if/when we can expect a version that works as a service...

Thanks!
