Hi guys,

New to the forum and new to the LFP World. I just got my LFP setup today by the Sony guys over the phone. All is good, it is hooked up to my DVR but I just noticed an annoying thing. One main reason I bought this item was because,if my wife is watching something on the TV here,I can go on my computer or PSP and watch something else but seems like I am stuck with whatever she is watching because the LFP is connected to the DVR box. Is there a way around this, that's my 1st question.

My 2nd question is, let's say that there is no way around my 1st issue and I want to change the LFP from my DVR to the bedroom TV that doesn't have a DVR, when I change it, do I have to play with any settings or once I plug the yellow, white, red cables in to the back of the TV, I will be all good to go????

I'd appreciate if somebody out here can give me an advice on this.

Thnx in advance,

Dogan

Hello,

Thanks for posting - and welcome!

Is this LFP a newer Sony locationFree unit, or something else? Most others are LFX units - do you have a URL for this unit so we can see exactly what it is your trying to hookup ?

With the older units they would plug into a DVR - they also have a passthru port I believe. There is also multiple inputs correct ?

Thx,
Sam

Hi there,

Here is the link to the actual item. This is the latest Sony LocationFree out there I believe.

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/sto ... 1665185950

and this is the picture of the back of the unit.

http://reviews.cnet.com/sc/32545365-2-440-DT1.gif

I called Sony again this morning and they said if this is connected to the DVR in my living room and I want to watch something else when my wife is watching something on the same tv, I can't do it because it is connected to the same DVR she is using. I said, how about I connect it to another tv, they said that's fine but I need a tuner with a video out, obviously the tv itself doesn't have this and I don't have another dvr box on the other tv and I don't plan on getting another one and paying a monthly fee for it so I was trying to see if there is any product on the internet that can provide me the video out function so that I can connect my location free box. If not, I will just hook it up to the dvr in the living room.

Thnx again

Ah ha, I see. On the older units there was actually a coax jack on the back and a built in tuner, so you could plug your cable directly into it without the need for another box. I don't see that jack on this one - maybe this one is geared more towards higher video quality since it has component video whereas the older ones didn't. You could always find one of the older ones with the built in tuner and use them both : )

yes. I have the PK1 I believe and it has a tuner built in. It's not HD but most TV these days isn't anyhow.

Well, here is another question for you Sam. I have this external tv tuner thingie, you can see what the back looks like in the link below.

If I were to buy this cable, http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/ehkseller/0002.jpg and connect the blue part to the tv tuner thingie and the cables from the location free box to the red-yellow-white cables, would it work instead of renting a dvr 7 bucks a month.Would it serve as video-out, that's my question basically.

that looks like it would work. I am not sure how it handles changing the channel on the tuner however... is there a remote that comes with it ?

yeah the tuner has a remote, but why would I need it? I should be able to change the channels from my PC or PSP, right?

well, the LFTV stuff will control something with an IR remote - I was just wondering if thats how it worked. I believe you will train the sony box to hit the remote buttons to change channels on that external tuner you have. Can't remember if it learns the IR commands or has them preset and you just find the one that works.

If your location free device doesn't have a built in tuner then you have to use one from a VCR, DVR or some other outboard tuner with video out. This all assumes you are on non-encrypted cable. If all of your TV viewing depends on a set top box, like satellite or scrambled cable, then you are out of luck. If you don't need a set top box to watch then just use an old VCR. there is a list of which ones can be operated using the IR "mouse" that came with the LF box. There are instructions on how to set all of that up either on the Sony site or on the CD that came with your unit.
